A federal grand jury found the four former Minneapolis police officers violated George Floyd’s constitutional rights. As a result the four former officers have been indicted. This comes less than a week after Derek Chauvin’s attorney filed for a new trial after a photo of one of the jurors surfaced of him wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt.
The grand jury indictment says Chauvin used “unreasonable seizure, which includes the right to be free from the use of unreasonable force by a police officer.”
The Department of Justice said in a statement Friday that Chauvin is also being indicted on charges related to a 2017 incident with a 14-year-old. In the DOJ statement they said Chauvin “held the teenager by the throat and struck the teenager multiple times in the head with a flashlight.”
Meanwhile Thao, Lane and Keung were indicted for other reasons. The indictment says “the defendants saw George Floyd lying on the ground in clear need of medical care, and willfully failed to aid Floyd, thereby acting with deliberate indifference to a substantial risk of harm to Floyd.”
The Department of Justice is still investigating the Minneapolis Police Department as well as the Louisville Police Department.
