A day of prayer and celebration for Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest celebrations in Islam, turned tragic after 26-year-old Khalid Abdi was shot and killed during an Eid prayer gathering at Canterbury Park in Shakopee on May 27.

Abdi’s family described him as someone whose “life was rooted in service,” adding that he advocated for workers, supported people trying to build better lives, and carried himself with “care, humility, compassion, and purpose.”

Abdi was newly married and preparing to become a father. Loved ones say he dedicated himself to supporting others — whether through his work, his community involvement, or the quiet ways he consistently showed up for family and friends.

“He showed up quietly, consistently, and with a heart rooted in service,” organizers wrote.

Khalid Abdi worked as a field representative for AFSCME Council 5, where colleagues say he became known for his commitment to workers and marginalized communities.

“Our AFSCME Council 5 family is in mourning,” Executive Director Bart Andersen said in a statement following Abdi’s death. “Khalid will be forever remembered for his tenacious organizing spirit, his warm and inviting presence, and his unyielding passion and drive to fight for the working-class and all historically marginalized communities.”

Andersen also highlighted Abdi’s mentorship and advocacy work, saying the impact he made on workers and collective bargaining efforts “will last a lifetime.”

Community members have launched a fundraiser to support Abdi’s wife, unborn child, and family with funeral expenses, living costs, and long-term support as they navigate the devastating loss.

A suspect was taken into custody this morning and is being held in Scott County Jail pending charges. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Shakopee Police Department at 952-445-1411.

Geometry Dash Lite. How can we foster more understanding and peace within our communities? I've seen how shared experiences, like cultural festivals, can bridge gaps but also have risks. What do you all think?
