20 Shots Fired: Richfield Police Release Footage Showing the Deadly Shooting of Desaver Hollis

The family of Desaver Hollis met with Richfield police Monday morning to view body camera footage showing, in part, the moments leading up the deadly shooting of Hollis. He was 27 years old.

According to police, on April 29, officers Mario Leon and Kristian Schultz were responding to an early morning call about a car prowler along the 7500 block of Morgan Avenue. After identifying Hollis as the suspect and a short foot chase through a parking lot, gunfire rang out.

Hollis family legal liaison Miss Nikki Holliday said the footage shown to relatives, and now released to the public, was “redacted and heavily edited.”

“What we do know is 20 shots were fired,” Holliday said. “Question is, at what point is it excessive force? We have another Black Man dead after interaction with police.”

Holliday said the family, represented by attorney Trisha Pohland and BNCL Law Firm, would not make further public comments about the specifics of the case while the investigation remains ongoing.

According to a press release from the City of Richfield, officers Leon and Schultz have been placed on critical incident leave. The Minnesota BCA is investigating the shooting and will submit their findings to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for review and possible charging decisions.
